THE HARBOR OF SANTOS

Brás Cubas built a chapel and a hospital during 1543, occupying the right bank of what would later be called the Estuary of Santos starting, in this way, the basis of the city.

Location of the Harbor of Santos

Growth of the harbor has been ruthless along the entire right bank while private terminals were constructed on the left bank of the Island of Santo Amaro. Today the harbor occupies more or less 12 km of the Estuary, between Ponta da Praia and Ilha dos Bagres, loading and unloading more than 70 million tons of cargo a year. The harbor of Santos and its terminals on the left bank of the Estuary entirely replaced the old mangroves up to Ponta da Praia. *

As of the birds frequenting the Harbor of Santos, they either occupy the surviving mangroves on the bank of the Island of Santo Amaro or are in the city itself. Some are opportunists, like pigeons feeding on everything, such as grains between the railway tracks. They, in their turn, are captured by the pilgrim falcon (Falco peregrinus) frequenting the harbor between spring and summertime.
